NABS Services

The National Advertising Benevolent Society (NABS) offers assistance to individuals who have spent the majority of their careers working in communications organizations involved in the creation, production and placement of advertising in Canada. Our free national services help individuals who need assistance due to illness, injury, unemployment or financial difficulties.

Our services include financial assistance, a national toll-free HELPLINE, personal, career and financial counseling, as well as professional career development workshops.

Financial Assistance

NABS offers short-term financial assistance (generally from one to three months) to help you cover a shortfall of funds. That means we will help you pay the difference between the monies you have coming in a particular month and the monies you need to cover essential expenses such as the rent, mortgage, phone, food and hydro. We do not cover back debts, student loans or lawyer's fees. If you need financial assistance, call Leslie Clare or Amanda Fearon at 416-962-0446. Or call 1-800-661-6227 for more information or to apply for assistance.

24-HOUR HELPLINE

If you need counseling or help at anytime, call our 24-HOUR HELPLINE. A counselor from the Family Services Employee Assistance Program will discuss what kind of counseling is best for your situation and book appointments for you.

24-HOUR HELPLINE: 1-888-355-5548

TELEPHONE LEGAL ADVISORY

The average length of a Legal Advisory Service call is 15-20 minutes and does not replace hiring a lawyer. NABS does not cover the cost of a lawyer should you decide to hire one.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS

NABS offers a number of Professional Development Workshops to help you sustain a cohesive and engaged workforce. They are available as one-hour "lunch and learns," or more in-depth half-day presentations. The workshops are available for both staff and management.

Generally, we hold workshops right in your workplace. However, if space is an issue, we may be able to host them in our office boardroom. Topics include:

Creating Employee Engagement/Healthy Workplace - Focuses on creating supportive management and illustrates the building blocks for creating engagement. Reviews how we handle stress and introduces successful workload initiatives.

From Vets to Nets: Managing the Multigenerational Workforce - Describes the generational cohorts and the strategies for success throughout the employee life-cycle. Reviews the differences between the generations and the reasons for these differences.

Managing Conflict with Style - Helps participants identify their primary and backup resolution styles and provides solutions for modifying them for the most effective results. Examines the causes of conflict and the difference between problem and conflict.

Managing Multiple Life Demands- Provides strategies that allow participants to achieve greater control over and satisfaction from home, family, personal and work demands.

Depression: The Hidden Disorder - Dispels common myths about depression and increases understanding of this disorder. A management presentation can be arranged to outline a review of best practices for return to work

Cash Management - Strives to re-frame how individuals think about what they earn and how much they spend. Not just for the "juniors." Even management level veterans will gain valuable advice and insight.

Making a Difference

When he applied to NABS, he was a 34-year-old married marketing manager with a young son. He had been unemployed for almost three years. His wife’s salary wasn’t enough to cover all the family’s expenses and they had used up all their savings and RRSPs.

NABS arranged financial assistance to help the family with essential needs. Personal, financial and career counseling enabled them to lower expenses and helped him find employment within three months.
